Gun Flint Tavern

Sometimes, on very rare occasions, it's not about the food. It's about the experience. If you find yourself on the Northwestern shores of the awe inspiring Lake Superior, in a place that's defies all conventional definitions of beautiful, what you would call "a great meal" will take on different dimensions. The place I'm talking about is none other than Grand Marais. Located on one of the world's most scenic drives and providing an entry point to the Boundary Waters Canoe Area, the rugged beauty of the place is something that no guidebook can ever do justice to.
Gun Flint Tavern is located in downtown Grand Marais, facing the harbor. Window seats are the first to fill but if you're lucky, you'll land one with a view of the lighthouse in the distance. There's nothing like the taste of freshly brewed coffee to warm you up on a chilly day and they certainly know how to make their coffee right.
Conversation flows easily when you're in the company of good friends. And when you have a plate of blue corn chips and fresh pico de gallo or maybe, a hummus and tabouli platter, you're off to a great start. A word of caution though. The portions are humongous. Popular favorites in the menu are the chili which is really hearty, bean burrito (which was an overdose of bean and little of much else) and a variety of salads and wraps. The prices are on the steep side but this is possibly due to the certified organic produce that is used, coupled with the location.
In the summer months, the tavern turns into a jazz and blues club hosting live bands, Thursday through Sunday evenings. Though they only serve wine and beer here, attached to the Gun Flint Tavern is raven's, an old-world pub with a nautical theme and up above is Raven's Nest, which has an outside deck and a full bar.
