Sunnyside Up Cafe

There are few better ways of enjoying a lazy weekend morning than in the company of good friends over brunch. Sunnyside Up Cafe in Minneapolis Uptown is a lively option. This spacious and colorful cafe with a Western theme (at least that's what it seemed like ti me!) serving large portions high on cheese and sugar, is a good place to get over a mean hangover from a night of fun partying.

The portions are massive! We were a large group and in retrospect, it might have been a better idea to share some of the items. I was disappointed to find that they do not serve any freshly squeezed juices, only juices made from concentrates.

If you like your eggs, the menu will not disappoint. The regular omelet with pepper jack cheese, jalapenos and mushrooms is one of our recommendations, especially is you like a little spice in your food. Another delicious omelette preparation is the cheese omelette with veggies and sausage. We also had the popular breakfast favorite, the Huevos Rancheros with corn tortillas. The corn tortillas were a tad chewy though, so you may want to opt for flour tortillas. If you don't like a runny yolk in an egg, this might not be the dish for you. The hashbrowns that we had on the side could have used more seasoning and would have been more appealing if they were crisper.

Sunnyside Up Cafe also has has its fair share of non-egg preparations. I asked for 1 blueberry pancake and 1 blue corn pancake and this was way too much food for me to eat in a single seating. The blueberry pancake was fluffy and quite a treat but the blue corn pancake was a let down. It did not have the corn niblets in it as the menu promised and was also quite low on visual appeal and flavor. Maybe a choice of toppings in terms of syrups, fresh fruit, cream etc would help for all that was served with the pancakes was maple syrup.

The interiors lack refinement and seem to be in need of some renovation. The staff, though attentive, is not the warmest possible. But the place is bustling and clearly popular in the Lyndale neighborhood. There are lots of families with children and the place has a local neighborhood feel to it that's appealing. And the prices are definitely on the cheaper side. It may not be the very best brunch place out there but it's certainly worth a mention.

I hope this restaurant review helps!
